After a five-year long ban, government officials in Syria have announced that Facebook is to once again be accessible to those living in the Middle Eastern state from today.
As well as Facebook, it is expected that many other social media sites are going to be included, with sources inside Syria already confirming that they have access to YouTube.
This announcement comes in the wake of civil unrest in Syria, following the new democratic charge seen first in Tunisia, then Egypt and now spreading to numerous other authoritarian states.
It is unlikely that this too-little-too-late gesture will do much to appease the will and yearning for democratic change in the country, with a number of well-placed sources believing that President Al-Assad’s days are already numbered.
